Vaal Bird Club April Activities
Dear fellow birders,
The following activities have been planned for April 2018. Hope you will join in some of them:
- Club evening Monday 9 April 2018
On Monday 9 April 2018 Steve Blake will give a talk on "Wild life travel experience through Western Canada (Rocky Mountains) and Alaska".
Venue: Old Mutual Building, Vanderbijlpark
Time: 19h00
- Club outing Saturday 14 April 2018
Alf Peters will lead an outing to Marievale Bird Sactuary on Saturday 14 April 2018. We meet in the car park at the Entrance Gate at 07h30.
We will finalize the outing at the club meeting.
3.Wakkerstroom outing at the end of April 2018, two or nights
I have booked the Wakkerstroom centre for Friday 27 April 2018 (a public holiday) to Wednesday 2 May 2018 (as Tuesday 1 May is a public holiday).
You can go for two nights (Friday and Saturday, coming back on Sunday) or longer (stay until Tuesday 1 May or Wednesday 2 May).
So far there are only eight of us going and there are still eight dormitories (two beds each) available. Please let me know if you are interested. Alison & John Lydon, Hennie, Rina and myself are going up the Wednesday, Amy plan to go until Tuesday (1 May) and Elaine and Paul want to come for the first two nights.
I will ask Kristi to book a bird guide for the morning of Saturday (28 April 2018) and for the Sunday morning (29 April 2018).
The rates for Wakkerstroom:
R255 per person per night for the Guest suites
R180 per person per night for the Dorm Rooms for a group of 12 or less people
R108 per person per night for groups of 13 or more people
R95 per person per night for campsites
R540 for a half day tour with bird guide
R895 for a full day tour with bird guide

Vaal Bird Club activities for the rest of 2017

We had an interesting meeting last night, learning about birding in Kenia and viewing some of the beautiful birds that one can find there. I would like to thank Johan L?tter from Vredfort for his talk.

- Club outing
On Saturday 18 November 2017 we have our November outing, also our End of the Year function. It will be held at Boschenvaal. If you have never been to Boschenvaal, it is a wonderful birding venue on the Vaal River, near Sasolburg.
We will meet at the outside gate of Boschenvaal (the one on the tarred road) at 07h00 where Marina Fick will let us into the property.
We will go for a birding walk and then have a picnic/braai at the harbour. Please bring your own refreshments, chairs and perhaps a picnic table. Marina and Johan will supply the charcoal.
At our November meeting Alison Lydon will send a list around to find out who intends to come to Boschenvaal. You will be asked to supply the number plate of the vehicle you intend to drive in, and a cell phone number. We can then give a list of participants to security at the second gate, that should speed up your entrance at the second gate.
In December we can try to organize another outing, perhaps to Deelfontein in the Vredefort. Please let me know should you be interested.

On Monday evening 14 August 2017 Hennie and Ronelle Storm will give a presentation called "A week's birding in the lower Kruger National Park". This talk was organized by Alf Peters.
Time: 19h00
Venue: Old Mutual Building, Vanderbijlpark
Guests are welcome, the cost being R25 per guest.
Please bring your bird books along.
- CWAC on the Vaal River
Our monthly outing will be the CWAC on the Vaal River on Saturday 19 August 2017 . Please arrive at Stonehaven on Vaal at 06h30 so that you can complete the indemnity form and Cliff can arrange the seating in the boats. The boats launch at 07h00.
If you have not yet let Cliff know that you want to join the waterbird count on Saturday 19 August 2017, please do so now so that he can arrange with Stonehaven and inform them about the number of people to cater for (Cliff.Wright@arcelormittal.com , cell no 076 503 8683).
